Can you link a word in a document to anywhere?
In this guide, I will show you how to create a link from a word in SharePoint Online in few simple steps.
Let’s get started!
What is a hyperlink?
You must’ve heard about hyperlinks already.
Basically, they’re clickable elements that can direct users to another webpage or document, even outside SharePoint.
Some common ways they’re used in SharePoint include:
- Internal links: Link to other pages/documents within the SharePoint site.
- External links: Direct users to external websites or resources.
- Anchor links: Link to specific sections within a page for easier navigation.
But mostly when inside SharePoint, they’re usually used to connect content and improve navigation.
Hyperlinks make accessing other information easier simply from what a user is already reading within the page.
How to Create a Link
Creating a link in SharePoint is simple.
Step 1: Open the page in edit mode
Find the SharePoint page from the document library and when you do, open it.
Then click the edit button on the top-right corner:

Nice!
Step 2: Insert the link
While editing the page, find the word you want to create a link.
Select the link and then click the hyperlink button from the more styles toolbar:

A modal or popup window will then appear.
Step 3: Add the URL
When adding a URL, you have two options here:
- For an external link, you can simply copy and paste it into the address field.
- For an internal link, you can use the search field and select the page title.
You can still use the address field though even for internal links by simply pasting the link there:

Meanwhile, in the search field, your selected text will automatically appear here, though you can also change it.
Once you find the page, you can just click on it and it will automatically appear in the address field:

You can also opt for the link to open a new tab by checking its box just below the table with the pages.
Once you save it, you will then see the created link on the page:

Easy!
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
Unfortunately, links in SharePoint might not work as expected.
Some common issues you may encounter include:
- Broken links (possible incorrect links/moved/deleted content)
- Permission problems (when users lack permission to view the content)
- Linking two regular words on the same page
If the links still don’t work, try removing and re-adding them or refreshing the page to see if changes take effect.
