Are there templates in SharePoint?
In this guide, let’s discuss the different templates available in SharePoint Online and how to use them.
Let’s get started.
Does SharePoint offer templates?
The short answer is yes, SharePoint offers a variety of templates to help you get started quickly.
The main types of templates available are:
- Site templates
- List templates
- Document library templates
- Page templates
- Workflow templates
As I always say about templates, they’re great for saving time and helping teams work more efficiently.
However, they may require some customization to meet specific needs, especially for complex tasks.
Types of SharePoint Templates Available
What I like about templates is that you don’t have to start from scratch, which is a big time saver.
Let’s go into each type of template that you can use:
1. Site templates
Site templates in SharePoint are pre-designed layouts that help you quickly set up different types of sites.
As you know, in the modern experience, there are two basic types of sites you can create:
Both have templates available:

You can easily access them by going to the gear icon > apply a site template.
Like this:

Each template has its own essential features right out of the box related to what the theme is all about.
You can further customize them to fit your specific needs, adding web parts, branding, or additional features as required.

2. List templates
Lists are one of those things that you will always be creating in SharePoint.
Having templates with pre-built fields and layouts for different types of information tracking is Heaven sent!

Long-time users know how hassle it is to create new lists from scratch.
Microsoft kept on adding new templates here as well for different scenarios, so you can just build on top of it.

3. Document library templates
Similar to lists, there are also templates available for document libraries.
These templates in SharePoint provide a ready-to-use setup for storing and managing documents efficiently.

There aren’t as many library templates though as there are with lists.
But the point still stands, these templates can simplify file organization and in a structured, searchable way.

4. Page templates
Besides lists and libraries, you will also be creating a lot of pages in SharePoint.
Thankfully, there are page templates that offer pre-built layouts to help you create web pages quickly and easily.

There are a lot of updates in the UI as well, as there are available page templates available right on the start page.
Unlike before, when you create a new page from the site contents, you will be prompted to select from page templates.
There are now section templates available, and there are “design ideas” available once you enter your content.

The easiest way though is to go to the start page.

5. Workflow templates
Workflow templates in SharePoint are designed to automate routine tasks and processes.
Integration with Power Automate provides you with ready-to-go templates right inside the list or library:

These templates help automate approvals, notifications, and other repetitive actions.
If you’re not satisfied with the templates you see, there’s a button at the bottom that will bring you to Power Automate.
You will be able to search through all templates available, or if that doesn’t work, you can create your own flow.

Limitations of SharePoint Templates
As with any good thing, there are some limitations to consider.
Here are some common limitations:
- Pre-built templates may not cater to niche business needs.
- Often, you will need to modify templates to fit your organization’s exact requirements.
- Complex workflows or integrations may require third-party tools or custom development.
- Pre-set designs may not align with branding or aesthetic preferences.
- Some templates might not handle large-scale projects effectively without adjustments.
While these templates provide a solid foundation, they may not always be the perfect fit for every scenario.
For more tailored solutions, you may need to invest time in customizing the templates or integrating additional apps.
