Want to add a page to the navbar?

In this guide, you will learn the step-by-step process of how to add a page to the navigation bar in SharePoint Online.

Let’s get started.

What is the quick launch navigation bar?

The quick launch navigation bar is a menu of links within a SharePoint site.

In modern SharePoint experiences, it may appear differently depending on the type of site:

It offers easy access to vital content like lists, libraries, and sub-sites, and can be tailored to include links to specific pages or external sites.

The quick launch improves user navigation by emphasizing site-specific content for easy resource discovery.

How to Add a Page to the Navigation Bar

To add a page to the navigation bar in SharePoint, follow these steps:

Step 1: Copy the URL of the target page

Go to the site pages document library and open the desired page.

From there, copy the link from the top link bar:

Step 2: Edit the navigation bar

With the modern experience, there’s no need to dive into the site settings page or go back to the home page to edit the navbar.

Just click on the edit button in the global navigation bar:

Once it’s open, you can either:

  • Make the page a primary menu item
  • Or make it a second menu item

Just hover on the space where you want to insert the link and click the add button:

the add button will enable you to add an item to the navigation bar

This will open a small window where you can add the link.

Note: Make sure that the navbar doesn’t look like a mega menu in your SharePoint Online site. Keep the site navigation visibility simple.

Step 3: Paste the URL of the target page

If you want the page to be a primary item, make sure the option is set to link.

Then add the link to the address field and enter the display name:

You can also opt for it to open in a new tab once clicked.

After you’re done, don’t forget to click the ok button.

This is the result:

As long as the link is correct, once a user clicks on it, the link should bring him/her to the page.

Having an Effective Navigation in SharePoint

Adding pages to the navigation bar will allow your users to arrive at important pages in your organization.

But since the bar can only hold a few links before it gets messy, you can also put some of the existing links as quick links on the home page.
